Before anyone starts lecturing me, yes, I do know that denial is not your friend. I know it keeps you away from confronting your problems, issues and demons -- blah, blah, blah. However, quite honestly, sometimes I prefer to live in my la-la land and just shut the entire world out for a few moments of uninterrupted bliss.
I think this began back in my elementary years. I blame it wholely on New Kids on the Block.
From the time I can remember, I was OBSESSED --- no I don't think you understand -- OBSESSED with New Kids on the Block like most other teeny-boppers out there. I had every cassette, every blanket, every big button and anything my mom would let me stuff into my shrine in my bedroom. I remember laying in bed with my walkman -- oh yeah, the cassette walkman -- singing along with Joey to "Please Don't Go Girl" while planning our upcoming nuptials.

My poor mother had to wait in endless lines for hours on end to secure tickets to the mayhem that would ensue months later when they arrived in concert. I remember one of the New Kids concerts she took me to (she took me to at least six, poor lady) we had to drive for nearly three hours in the worst blizzard Michigan had seen in decades. I sat very quietly in the front seat after she threatened to turn the car around and go home if I uttered one more word. Clearly she was a tad stressed. Anyhow, during that concert Joey had an asthma attack and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and we were told he would not return. Crushed. Literally -- MY. WORLD. ENDED.
But not for long because that incident birthed my new found love in Jordan. Please, he'd never let an asthma attack come between us!! Besides, I was getting older and needed a more "mature" New Kid. By the way -- what's up with this NKOTB crap? It's the New Kids. It always will be.
When New Kids announced they were taking a "break" -- I was once again heartbroken. No more mapping out or color scheme for our wedding flowers or deciding how I will break it to Mom that I'm moving out of her house to tour with the band. My la-la land was gone.
I lived in reality from 1994 - 1996 and that wasn't pretty. Luckily I just so happened to be watching the Ru Paul show late in 1996 when Backstreet Boys made their first United States appearance. So...do you think Nick Carter would prefer teal and pink or tan and peach? HELLO LA-LA LAND, boy have I missed you!
I must say even as an adult today I prefer to escape to la-la land every now and again. Time won't allow it to become a regular occurrence but on the rare occasions it does -- I become Joey, Jordan and Nick's love all over again. I plug in my headphones, open the music app, scroll to "My Happy Place" playlist and hit shuffle. Tuck that phone in my back pocket, throw in the headphones and away I go!!!
I hope you all have the chance to visit your personal la-la lands occasionally too. Just keep your paws away from my Joey, Jordan and Nick and we'll be good. Otherwise -- I will hurt a bitch.
